I vividly remember the tale of the “Boy Who Cried Wolf” as I was growing up. It was an admonishment never to lie, and in fact never to exaggerate. Something that I was prone to, when I was younger.

In the tale a Boy runs into town telling all of the townsfolk that a wolf was loose and threatening their flocks. The townsfolk rush to the fields, only to find out there was no wolf. The Boy had made up the tale. It was a hoax.
